UNESCO launched a new publication, Good Policy and Practice in Health Education – Booklet 9, Puberty Education and Menstrual Hygiene Management, in New York at the United Nations, at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on 13 March in collaboration with Procter & Gamble Always® Brand.

The aim of the publication is to increase commitment to addressing and implementing puberty education (PE) and menstrual hygiene management (MHM) in educational institutions.

Puberty Education and Menstrual Hygiene Management, the ninth publication in the UNESCO series Good Policy and Practice in Health Education, seeks to help overcome the ignorance, shame and confusion that millions of girls feel during puberty. In some parts of the world, two out of three girls reported having no idea of what was happening to them when they began menstruating. This can have many negative effects on their physical and emotional development, and affect school performance and continuation.

The report provides examples of global good policy and practice in these fields and is intended for education sector policy-makers, planners and managers as well as their development partners.
