Every child has the right to education. Schools should be a safe environment where the child acquires knowledge and develops his/her personality. We are all responsible for assuring the child an environment free from bullying and violence. Despite the ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child by all countries in the region, the prevention of, and response to, violence against children remains inadequate as children continue to experience violence in educational settings. School related Gender Based Violence is however a reality for many students all over the world.
Based on the findings from the regional report “School-Related Gender-Based Violence [SRGBV] in the Asia-Pacific Region”, the UNESCO-UNGEI global report on SRGBV, and the UNESCO-UNGEI discussion paper on this issue, UNESCO is commissioning a desk review of SRGBV in Indonesia. The review will specifically consider the nature and scope of SRGBV in Indonesia and its impact, and existing policy, programming and implementation responses and what needs to be done to prevent and address SRGBV.
To discuss the findings and identify actions that can be taken to address this issue, UNESCO hosted “A Stakeholder Meeting: The Situation and Response Analysis on the SRGBV in Indonesia”. The meeting included how SRGBV affects the education outcome, how it can cause low self esteem amongst the students, poor performance, irregular attendance and even lead to drop out. The stakeholders mentioned the challenges in providing the child’s right to education as well as how SRGBV affects the health of the student. A brief introduction to homophobic bullying in Indonesia was also presented.
During this meeting, government officials from various ministries, NGOs and UN agencies discussed the prevention and response interventions, and recommendations to address SRGBV in Indonesia.
